European Business Services, the Euro
Info Centre for the North of Scotland, organised an
evening event to open the “Discover Europe 25”
exhibition in Inverness Town House.
The Euro Info Centre sent out 500 invitations to businesses,
local authorities and the public. The event was advertised
on the EIC web site and also in the weekly EIC news
bulletin for two weeks. The event was also advertised
in the local newspaper “Inverness Courier”
with an article and picture (see enclosure).
The first speaker John Purvis, MEP for Scotland from
the Conservative Party opened the evening with an overview
of the EU Enlargement process. He particularly focused
on Scotland’s role in the expanded EU and encouraged
Scottish businesses and population to take up the new
opportunities that have arisen. He welcomed the cultural
gain that Europe will experience but also mentioned
the challenges that come with an increased number of
member states, in particular the redistribution of European
Funding.
The second speaker Mr Wojciech Tycinski, the Consul
General of Poland in Edinburgh provided the audience
with information about Poland in the enlarged EU. He
described in detail the political developments that
took place in the years before EU expansion. He gave
the audience an insight into the fears and hopes of
the Polish population in the time before 1st May 2004.
He highlighted how different economic sectors in Poland
have since dealt with being and trading in the new EU
environment. Economic figures of the Polish economy
which he provided showed that Poland is very well placed
in the new Europe and he also encouraged Scottish businesses
to take up the excellent opportunity to start successful
co-operation with the new European Member States.
Mr David Owen, Manager of Highland Opportunity closed
the opening with a short description of the Euro Info
Centre network and its services.
