Lecture - The Enlargement
of Europe with Exhibition Opening Event
Time: Wednesday 5/11/2003, 6 am.
to 7:30 pm.
Place: Kokkola, Finland, City Hall
Opening of the event and discussion part
The evening began with a cocktail and a small buffet
at the lobby of the City Hall, around the exhibition
which the guests could freely get familiar with. Also
a fagot and cello performance by Austrian and Finnish
music students was listened to by participants. After
this we proceeded to a lecture hall where the one
and half an hour discussion took place.
At first Mr. Wolf-Dietrich Heim,
Minister Counsellor, Deputy Chief of Austrian Embassy,
gave us an overview on the current state of IGC. His
main focus was on the viewpoints and stances of Austria
and Finland. Questions by the audience concerned,
for example, the neighbouring countries Slovenia,
Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic and the situation
after the enlargement. In the next presentation, which
was held in Finnish, Ms. Raik concentrated on Estonian
EU policy in the future. She was also asked e.g. about
the US demand for the Estonian government to guarantee
not accusing Americans in the International Criminal
Court.
Exhibition
The exhibition was opened on 5/11 and was being displayed
until the event in Turku on 21/11. The City Hall is
not merely an administrative centre, but also a place
where good facilities bring other activities and other
people than only civil servants and customers. The
exhibition and brochure table were situated close
to the entrance, next to another, a different kind
of exhibition. Hundreds or over a thousand people
visit the City Hall daily.
Media
There was a advertisement in a local newspaper. In
addition to that the website of IEM-Finland and local
contacts were utilized. Also every member of the newly
founded IEM-Kokkola received an invitation. However,
several participants were not members of IEM-Kokkola.
There were two articles, one in Finnish
and another one in Swedish, in regional newspapers
concerning the founding of IEM-Kokkola. As the first
event of the association also the exhibition was handled
in the articles (highlighted parts). In addition to
IEM-Kokkola the organisers were JEF-Kokkola, Infopoint
Europe and Europe Information Kokkola (Finnish Foreign
Ministry).
